WebFeatured Answer. We ended up never using a chemical stripper and went straight to sanding, then applied a clear coat of poly after cleaning. It took time and created lots of dust, but it turned out beautifully, taking most of the honey color out. The wood was lighter after sanding, but of course when poly was applied it darkened back up a bit.
